Main / Expeditions / The Podkamennaya Tunguska 2004 The Podkamennaya Tunguska 2004The name of this rather long river is famous to many Russians. It’s also well-known outside, because of Tunguska meteorite. Although nobody has found remains of this meteorite, there is a fact that in 1908 in taiga, not far away from Vanara settlement a great explosion happened. You can see signs of this accident even nowadays. Lots of hypothesis have been offered since then. Undoubtedly the mystery draws attention of those, who look for adventures. But isn’t the Tunguska interesting itself? Is the phenomenon worth of more attention than usual beauty of the Earth? To prove the opposite I had to take a long voyage down the river. The Podkamennaya Tunguska is a big right inflow of the Yenisei, it runs through the vast territory of Srednesibirskoe tableland. It has sources in Irkutsk region, but the main part of its way lies in Evenkiya. This river is crossed by neither any road, nor any bridge. There are only two big settlements on its banks – Vanavara and Baikit. It’s surrounded with endless territories of taiga. My fellow worker Kirill Shapovalov an I went great distance down the river – 1700 kilometres: from the beginnings to the mouth. We spent more than two months, surrounded with taiga, the river and spirit of this region. As a result we have got intense feelings and great photo material. You can read about this travel in the article “Podkamennaya Tunguska”.
